I first traveled to Morocco with my best friend, and it left a lasting impression. We moved through the country with a kind of wide-eyed urgency, from the noise and rhythm of Marrakech to the stillness of the Sahara. We hiked through Todra Gorge, spent a night in Zagora, and tried to take in as much as we could. It was chaotic, beautiful, and unlike anything I’d experienced before.
That trip stuck with me. I went back not long after, this time with my partner, and we followed a different route. New cities, new landscapes, a slower pace. What stood out wasn’t just the scenery but the way Morocco seems to shape each visit into something distinct. It doesn’t repeat itself.
What draws me in now is hard to define. It’s partly the geography, partly the culture, but mostly it’s the way the place makes you feel—like you’re always slightly off balance, in a good way. Morocco doesn’t try to impress you; it just is what it is. And that’s what keeps pulling me back. I want to help other people experience that too, without dressing it up too much.
I was nineteen when I left for Morocco, leaving Sardinia and the blacksmith’s trade to chase the dream of the desert. Marrakech welcomed me with the whirlwind of sounds and scents of Jeema el Fna, the labyrinth of the Medina and the silence of the riads, a prelude to a journey that would change me. A ramshackle bus carried me across the Atlas, through mud villages and roads clinging to cliffs, to Ouarzazate, the gateway to the Sahara.
There I met Iddir, a young Sahrawi Berber who invited me as his guest. I accepted, discovering that sometimes one must follow the heart more than the mind. Traveling together through primordial rocks and Berber villages in old crowded Renaults, I discovered Desert Blues, ancestral music that spoke of pain and hope, weaving Africa and America.
We crossed the Draa Valley to the Chigaga erg: an ocean of red dunes, blazing sunsets, and star-filled nights where I understood the true destination lies within.
After 30 years this journey hasn’t ended yet.
